To be assertive and inform any significant other you feel you can share your problems with

Report the cases and let the victims be given heavy penalty

Families do compromise and at times paid to remain silent

The process becomes tedious and commital, dealing with police

Ignorance by some community members on where they can be assisted eg childhelp line

Talking openly to the children about it,teach them the importance of reporting the cases.

.The culprits to be given a very good penalty that would make others having the same mentality to refrain from attempting it.

.not discussed openly because according to our African culture ,sex was not a topic for discussion.

.culture should not be used as an excuse to sexual abuse. Come up with tight rules to suppress the vices.

1. The sexual abuses could have been prevented. Adults should have provided a safe space and environment for open communication and sensitization on what to avoid so as not to fall prey to sex predators.

2. What all stakeholders can do to prevent child sexual abuse is to rise up to the occassion and speak openly about the vice. They can also rally efforts to protect children collectively and give them the right information about personal protection from sexual abuse.

3. Why cases of sexual abuse are not reported is because they involve close family members or relatives who are breadwinners and friends. They fear loss of a livelihood. Close family members also do not believe it when children report sexual abuses. Culture too is a hindrance since it is considered a taboo to discuss such issues.

In case of SITA,the government should get rid of criminals in the area.

The community should also identify such criminals in their area and report them.

In case of Bino,

The guardian failed him for not providing a meal.

He should also be advised against taking food from strangers.

Insaras case:

The grand mother over trusted the son.

Sara could have confided with someone.

She could have also run away.

Her teacher should have told them about child line Kenya.

The government should punish rapists so thoroughly that others learn a lesson.

Such cases are not reported due to:

Embarrassment.

Culture does not allow such things to be spoken openly.

Some are solved by parents and communities.

Some are feared to cause rivalry between families.

Case 1.she would have avoided walking in lonely places.she needed lifeskill lessons on that

Case2.

If he was not so hungry he could have been alert on his surrounding and would not have trusted the stranger.

Case 3.

She would have confided in the teacher if she was not so afraid.her circumstances made her vulnerable

Ques2.

The underage need to be taught lifeskills to help them avoid them bring vulnerable.eg.

1.dont follow or talk to strangers or go to their houses or eat food given by strangers

2 report is confide I somebody if not comfortable with a certain adult.

3.defence.scratch,scream,kick.

4.community needs to do awareness campaigns.to show that this is a vice that should not be entertained.

5 teach boys to respect girls and teach girls how to behave where male people are to avoid awkward  situations

Ques.3

1.culture entertains this vice because it is sorted out amicably in the community by giving the aggrieved family an animal.the girl in a community is not considered because she can be married off and in a way a boy who rapes or young man is considered a hero because its proof he is a man.

The victims fear because they can be blamed for creating the atmosphere for rape.

The victims fear  because they fear family conflict if it is incest.

Discussions on sexuality is a taboo to be discussed

Yes,the abuse could have been prevented. Children walking to school along a forested area should be accompanied by an adult. Second, children should be advised not to accept gifts/food or even rides from strangers.

Sexual abuse can be prevented by enacting laws that metes severe punishment on sexual offenders. Children should also educated on reproductive health and how and whom they can get help from in case of abuse..

Sexual abuse sometimes go unreported because the victims are threatened by offenders, others fear to be victimized, shame etc.

Rape is forced sexual act... where there's no consent from one of the partners.

Incest is the sexual act between people who are related by blood.

These abuses could have been avoided if the victims:

Don't walk on lonely paths

Avoid taking present from strangers

Punishing perpetrators

Young people and children must avoid watching pornography in the internet, teachers to teach sex education, government to punish perpetrators of such crimes, parents to sensor what their children are watching on social media

Why sexual issues ( rape, incest and sexual harassment is not openly discussed:

* Because of shame on the part of the abused

* The victim becomes a social misfit

* Culture does not strongly condemn perpetrators of such crimes

* The abused is forced to get married to the abuser

* Once the abuser pays a token to the family, the crime/ case is dismissed

- The cases of abuse could have been avoided e.g if Sita had not been left to walk alone from school,Bino had been well provided for, foodwise and warned not to accompany strangers to their homes,Sarah had not been left home alone and if she had been given the assurance that she could confide in her aunt and grandma about anything.
- To avoid rape;

* Adolescents should report any signs of sexual advances to a responsible adult.

* Adolescents should avoid being in secluded or isolated places alone.

* Adolescents should avoid any form of drug abuse.

* Parents, teachers and community should create awareness on causes and effects of rape.

- Many cases of rape are not discussed or reported because;

1.The offender could be a relative or neighbor.

2.Fear of the offender especially if in a position of authority e.g father, uncle, teacher, religious leader etc

3.Shame

4.Ignorance/ lack of knowledge on what to do in such a situation.

5.Bribes from the offender or their family.

6.If previous similar cases have been reported and no action was taken.

Yes,the sexual abuse could have been prevented by not walking alone in a lonely path like in the first case study.

Not accepting food and drinks from strangers like in the second case study.

Sharing with a teacher or a school mate in the third case study.

Adolescents can make a decision to abstain ,dress decently and appropriately and set boundaries .

Parents and teachers can join hands in training and empowering young children to open up to trusted persons in case of a problem. They should also give them the correct information regarding sexuality.

The community can take collective responsibility in taking care of the young ones and offering them protection. They can also campaign against drug abuse through churches and social gatherings.

The government can assist in taking stern measures against sexual abusers and fighting for justice for the victims because justice delayed is justice denied.

Most of the times, cases of sexual abuse aren't reported or discussed openly because most of them ,like incest, are by close family members and the victims feel that nobody will believe them.

Other reasons include:

_Stigmatization.

_Embarrassment.

_Fear that people will gossip about them.

_Victims are threatened that they will be killed if they disclose the abusers.

It could have been prevented by being careful. Not walking in lonely paths alone, refusing to talk to strangers and getting favours from them, being assertive. Sara should have told off his uncle and reported him to her grandmother.

Every child should be taught to speak up against child abuse and be given the helpline 116.

The government should give severe punishment to the offenders

Yes the situations could have been prevented sita could have walked with other  schoolmates or with her siblings or taken by motorcycle to school.bino could not be sodomed if only his parents were able to provide him with his basic needs is food, sara could have a voided the scenario by reporting to the nearest authorities if she knew the aunties and grandma could not have trusted her

What should be done to minimize sexual abuse to underage

Create awareness on the various causes

Ensuring victims have life imprisonment

Providing basic needs to the vulnerable groups

Sexual abuse cases are not discussed openly coz it's an ugly act not tolerated by any community and it's also un biblical

  •  Yes, the abuse could be prevented. Adolescents should be advised to avoid places that expose them to attacks leading to rape. They should avoid taking gifts and free things from strangers.

  • We should do sensitization to our adolescents to enable them avoid situations that could lead to them being rape victims. The government should put in place stern corrective measure that would surely discourage sex offenders from committing the act.

  • Due to fear of humiliation. Most societies are uncomfortable handling such cases due to the negative notions associated with sex and sexual acts.

1. Could the sexual abuse have been prevented? How?

Yes, if the adults protected the children instead of raping them.

2. What can adolescents, parents, teachers, community and the government do to avoid sexual abuse, especially rape to the underage (cite media reports)

Respecting and taking care of each other. Holding the people who rape accountable for their actions.

3. Why do you think cases of sexual abuse are not reported or discussed openly?  Sex is a taboo subject in our society. Families do not want to expose their family members who are found to have sexually abused others. The victims are not believed.

ROLE OF DIFFERENT PEOP[LE IN CURBING SEXUAL ABUSE

Gorvenment to ensure there are laws protecting children and meting  punishment to offenders.

Parents and teachers need to educate children on signs to detect danger of being defiled, speak openly about any threat for such abuse, report to peop[le who can assist in case of threat ,dressing modestly ,avoiding drugs and alcohol and situations where the allure of sex is. Provide and enhance safety of the youth

Adolescents should ensure modest dressing, avoiding lonely areas alone, reporting any threat, learn protective skills like karate.

Society should strongly speak against acts of abuse and stop labelling those victims because it rewards the offender for the 'heroic' act

This could have been prevented by :not walking alone, avoiding gifts from strangers and by openly reporting people who make sexual advances.

The society does not allow sexual matters to be discussed openly and always blame the female gender incase of rape

Sita could have prevented herself by walking through a busy road and with company.

Bino could also have avoid himself from being lured with intoxicated juice and chips.

Sarah should have reported  the advances earlier  to protect herself from abuse.

The Adolescents  needs to be empowered on ways of protecting themselves from sex abuse. There is need to avoid lonely  and deserted roads, walk in company, use the child  help line 116 and be assertive.

Cases of sexual abuse are not reported or discussed openly due to : fear of stigmatisation,  becoming societal victim , hash treatment  by the society. Our culture treats  men as masters oer women.

The sexual abuses could have been avoided;

Sita could have avoided walking alone

Bino's parent could have provided him with food and warn him against accepting gifts from strangers.

Sara could have talked to the grandmother or aunty about her plight

Sexual abuses can be prevented;

The government can ensure severe punishment is given to offenders

Parents should be sensitized about their children safety

There's need to make everyone aware of child helpline_116

Sexual abuses are not openly discussed for fear stigmatization which might follow the victims.

  • Could the sexual abuse have been prevented? How? If she used assertiveness she could have been save.

  • What can adolescents, parents, teachers, community and the government do to avoid sexual abuse, especially rape to the underage (cite media reports) infusing sexuality in all learning areas

  • Why do you think cases of sexual abuse are not reported or discussed openly?  Encourage groups to think about the role of culture and social interactions. It's because the police redicule those reporting And parents in some cultures prohibits discussion of sex in the open and should be done away with

Sita could sought company to school, Biro should avoid favour from strangers, Sara should have shared the issue earlier with a trusted adult not necessarily a grandmother.

Parents teachers should offer education on sexual abuse to young people to create awareness and inform them of the help line.

People fear talking of sexual abuse because of cases of stigmatization.

This could have been avoided If Sita had been accompanied by a parent to school,or I bino had eaten at home or school, and cautioned against trusting strangers.

Let's normalise talking to our children on sexual abuse and what to do if faced with such situations right from kindergarten.

The culprits should also face harsh punishment and the victims protected from stigma and blame.

Sexual abuse of any kind can be avoided. Sita could have walked alone in bush path. Bino wouldn't have visited a stranger's house. Sara would have reported the uncle's advance not matter the consequences.

Ways of dealing with rape cases

- reporting to authoritie

- punishing severely those involved

- boys or girls walking in groups

- separating boys from girls

Cases of sexual abuse are not reported because many people associate it with shame

Sexual abuse is the forcing of somebody (both boys and girls) into sex without their consent

Sita case could have been avoided. She could have used a path that was used by other people or walk together with other learners as she got out of school. Also not letting it get dark before she is home.

Bino case could also be avoided. But it was hard since he was hungry and this is a basic need. He really wanted food and forgot not to take things from strangers. He should not have followed the stranger and much more take gifts (food) from him.

The case of Sara is a bit complicated. She was helpless. However if she stood firm and report, am sure she could have gotten assistance even without the help of the uncle.

WHAT TO DO

Children be taught on sexual abuse

Children be taught how to be assertive and say no.

Children know who to report to when they see signs of danger.

Step 2.   Sita:
1 parents should not have left her to walk alone to school.
2  could seek company along the way.
3  attempt to shout if possible.
         Bono
_ Although hunger is very tempting, she should have been patient until she gets food from a reliable person
_ At least not to go to a home he does not know
_ Onlywish to eat from home
       Sarah
_take courage and report to the grandma or untie
_report to the G/C teacher for the necessary action to be taken.
Step 3
These abuses can be prevented by    1. Adolescents
  Should at least dress well
Avoid watching phonographs from the internet.
  Avoid solitary areas
Avoid too much closeness to people of the opposite sex.
         2 Parents
_ feel free and tell children the dangers around them
_ensure safety of children as they go to and from school .
_know where they are over the weekend and the holidays
_Trytheir level best to provide the basic needs.
_Invite God to take lead in our families
   3. Teachers
_ Guide  and counsel the Learners as they teach
_report any cases of abuse to the relevant authority
4  Government/Community
_  set rules and regulations for child protection.
Impose high penalties on the abusers
_Strengthen school feeding program
_ Try to control internet business on phonography.
Cases of sexual abuse are rarely reported because of:
_fear of the stigma behind it
_ long court processes
_high cost which may never be recovered
_not to destroy the victim's image
_some don't know their rights
_ poverty in the family

Sita rape case could have been a voided if the parents had taken the responsibility if escorting their daughter to school through bushy path.

Bino rape could have been a voided if bino had not accepted favor from stranger.

Sara's rape case could have been a voided if Sara could have reported to the grandmother a bout the uncles issue without fear.

To avoid cases of rape

Government should open charges to the people who rape and harsh consequences should face the,

Teachers and parents should take the learners through guidance and cancelling to enlighten the a bout possible ways through which they can fall victim and how they can prevent

Community should take a collective responsibility to take care of the youth as they are their future generation, if left destroyed, the fate of future can not be determined.
